IR System - To control Hidden AV Equipment Over a Long Distance (23m) from multiple TVs (locations).

Overview

Our IR system is suitable for use with all major brands of remote control including universal remote controls. It allows information gathered from IR receivers to be relayed to IR emitters to control and operate AV equipment (whether they are in an AV cupboard or another room). Up to 5 IR receivers and 12 IR emitters can be used with this hub to control up to 12 sources such as an amp, Blu-Ray player, DVD player, sky box, etc. Once installed it can be fixed into position using the supplied screws.

What's Included?

1 x IR Hub
1 x Dual IR Emitter (3m Long) - for use with up to 2 sources
1 x 12V Power Supply - for IR Hub
4 x IR Receivers (3m Long)
4 x 20m 3.5mm Plug to Plug Cable - For extending the IR receivers
4 x 3.5mm Stereo Socket Connector - For soldering to the supplied 20m 3.5mm cable after it has been cut down to the desired length.

Screws for mounting IR Hub
Self-adhesive tape underneath the IR receiver and IR emitters

Installation

Normally the IR hub would be located near to your AV equipment. There are six 3.5mm mono emitter sockets (as seen on the diagram above) to which up to six dual IR emitters can be connected, please search through our shop to find this product, single emitters are available too. Up to five IR receivers can be used with this hub by wiring them in parallel at the screw terminals. The screw terminals are labelled +12VDC, ground, status and signal, the IR receiver has the following wiring to the 3.5mm stereo plug, Signal is tip, ground is the ring and power is the sleeve. To extend an IR receiver cable, one of the supplied 20m '3.5mm plug to plug cable' should be used along with a 3.5mm stereo socket connector. One of the plugs can be cut off the supplied cable, the cable should be cut to the desired length and the 3.5mm socket soldered on. If you do not wish to solder the connector on and are happy with the 20m cable then a '3.5mm coupler adapter' could be purchased to avoid any soldering, please search through our shop. Many cables are suitable for extending the IR receiver cables, typically CAT5 cable is used as it is readily available and 3.5mm stereo plug and socket connectors can be soldered on easily.

IR emitters should be positioned in front of, above, below or fixed on to the IR receiver on your source device and any signals fed to the emitter will be blasted out to enable control of your equipment.

IR receivers should be positioned in the room where you would like to control your equipment from. They will then pick up any IR commands sent from your remote control and relay them back to the hub.

Status LED

Some 12V IR receivers can be purchased which have a 'status LED'. This is simply an LED which is illuminated when the source equipment is switched on. The status LED can be swithced on and off using a 12 volt trigger found on some equipment, alternatively you could simply buy a gang socket into which all of your source equipment would plug, as well as the power supply for the status LED. When the source equipment is off, the status LED will be too indicating none of the source equipment can be controlled.

Troubleshooting when installing

Sometimes IR receivers struggle receiving/distinguishing commands due to infrared interference usually caused by TVs, fireplaces or direct sunlight. If the interference is extremely high in the area where the IR receiver is placed the blue IR confirmation LED may always be on. To reduce the interference to a manageable level, placing masking tape or paper over the IR receiver can help. Newer TVs may have an 'energy saving function' which when in use the TV can emit a lot of IR interference. Turning this function off can help dramatically.
